An exhausted woman makes her way through the desert hills and passes stopped vehicles that contain human skeletons She stumbles upon a cabin inhabited by a guy who has also miraculously survived the nuclear holocaust that destroyed virtually everything. The only other animal they've seen are birds. He was in New York City when the bombs detonated and she was protected by the lead walls of a hospital x-ray room. They think they are the only survivors until two more men show up, an old bank teller and an African-American who was a doorman at that bank. They were protected by the building's vault. Yet the old guy develops blisters on his skin and dies of radiation poisoning. On the same say they find another guy washed ashore from the ocean. This guy was an explorer and was up on Mt. Everest. This is when trouble begins to develop. This explorer is pompous, doesn't want to work planting crops and hates being in the same vicinity as the black guy. He starts foraging in the nearby cities and even acquires a gun. He also wants the woman, who was pregnant and had a baby boy. He tricks her into going with him but something unexpected happens which changes his outlook about his miraculous survival.
FIVE is one of the better apocalyptic movies, similar to THE WORLD, THE FLESH & THE DEVIL. And yes, the black guy here also dances. Yet for the 1950's this is a realistic and harsh movie.
