Loosely based on the H.G. Wells' novel, this Bert I. Gordon production is better than his other FOTG interpretation, VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS. Marjoe Gortner (EARTHQUAKE) portrays a football player who goes on vacation two of his friends and one of the guys gets stung by a giant wasp, though they don't see what actually stung him. They end up going back to the island to investigate when the coroner says he was stung by the equivalent of hundreds of wasps. There they encounter Mrs. Skinner (Ida Lupino), who lives on a small farm. This is where the "Food" is bubbling out of the earth-and anything that consumes it grows in size. Gortner fights a giant chicken in her barn-and then the giant rats appear. There's also a slimy businessman and a young couple who join them and take refuge in the house, trying to fend off the giant rodents.
Some of the special effects are crude by today's standard, but the giant rats (the majority of the time real rats are used, then giant mockups when they are fighting them hand to hand) hold up well and the movie is violent and unrelenting. FOOD OF THE GODS holds up pretty well over the past thirty years.
