Donald Pleasence portrays a mad scientist, Professor Nolter, who believes that the only way mankind can survive in the future is if they evolve plant-like characteristics, such as getting energy from the sun. So he has begun creating these weird plant/human hybrids with this cyclotron gun he has where he teaches. In his home lab he has these bizarre creations. One of them, which is a towering pitcher plan, he feeds live rabbits to.
Nolter isn't doing this alone. He has help from a circus sideshow of freaks, who kidnap his many victims. The guy who runs the circus (an unrecognizable Tom Baker) is horribly deformed, like the kid in MASK, and believes the doctor will make him look normal as long as he helps him procure subjects for his experiments. When these experiments don't turn out as expected they end up as new attractions in the side-show, such as an unfortunate blonde who is transformed into a "snake woman". It's horrendous. But they made a mistake in kidnapping this blonde because her boyfriend becomes worried and starts to investigate. He discovers what the doctor is going but ends up as a "successful" experiment, which means he won't die. He doesn't way to stay like this so he gets his revenge on the doctor. There's a scene at the end of the movie that David Cronenberg totally lifted for his version of THE FLY. The hybrid creature crashes through the skylight in his lab, lands upon him and spews flesh dissolving fluids on him. In fact, I'd say David Cronenberg's version of THE FLY is far more influenced by this movie than the original THE FLY.
This is one of those movies that is a must see-- it's disturbing and a solid representation of a horror movie from the 70's.
