This new Gamera movie (I'm assuming the first in a series) takes the giant turtle back to being much more of a 'monster for kids'. The film begins thirty years in the past, with Gamera sacrificing himself to save the inhabitants of a small coastal village. In the present, a young boy, who has recently lost his mother, finds a mysteriously glowing stone in that same area along with a turtle egg. It hatches and he keeps the turtle though he's not supposed to have pets since his father runs the restaurant they live above. The turtle soon does a weird thing---it flies. Then, it begins to grow to an enormous size, which is good because it's around the same time that evil monster Jidas shows up. Jidas is sinister and violent, appearing very much like a crocodilian dragon.
I did find this new Kaiju movie much more entertaining than the overhyped 'The Host'.
And yes, I am a big Gamera fan.
