Greetings, kiddies!
Tonight, we tread down a path that we've been down before...and sadly, this revisit wasn't a terribly pleasant one.
The Gates of Hell is an Austrailian indie flick that hits all the stereotypes; the handsome, rugged lead; the hot 'bad' girl; the virtuous, naive girl; the nerdy computer whiz; and the tough guy loner. Also, we have the now painfully typical "there's this weird old place that's supposedly haunted, let's go make a movie there" formula...and we're given little else.
There's a modicum of effort to turn some new twists into the plot(including a "twist ending" that's not necessarily predictable but not really a surprise, either) but they're shallow and thin at best...the worst part to me was that the explanation for what is going on, what little there IS of it, is spotty and incomplete...what you end up with is one part "The Hills Have Eyes", one part "Wrong Turn", and a sprinkle of "The Blair Witch Project"...but the whole is far less than the sum of the parts.
I wanted to like this flick; I'm a fan of indie horror, and while it had a couple of interesting special effects for a low-budget outing, overall the film was just too formulaic and flat to give me any satisfaction.
I watched this one so you kiddies don't have to. Send cookies!
