Betram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) is a New York City dentist who has sub-zero people skills. He likes being a dentist because he doesn't have to listen to people talk. He also likes his mundane, controllable routine. This changes, however, when he goes in for a routine medical procedure and dies for a short time before they can bring him back. The doctors don't tell him that he died-- he finds out when he starts seeing all the ghosts that inhabit the city.
Think of Ghost Whisperer, only Pincus doesn't want to help any of the ghosts. One spirit, in particular, won't leave him alone, the ghost of a businessman, Frank (Greg Kinnear) who has some unfinished business with his wife, Gwen (Tea Leoni). He thinks that he has to get her to break up with her new boyfriend, who he thinks is a jerk.
But Pincus is interested in her, much to Frank's dismay, and it's a relationship that may indeed change him and how he sees the world--and its ghosts.
This is a very funny movie, sort of a spoof of shows like HAUNTED, MEDIUM and GHOST WHISPERER.
