This last volume of this Hammer series includes three stories. The first, VISITOR FROM THE GRAVE, concerns a wealthy woman (Katherine Leigh Scott of DARK SHADOWS) who kills an intruder in self-defense. Her boyfriend, who knows the man, helps her cover it up rather than go to the police. But she starts seeing the murdered man and is convinced he's out to get her for revenge. This eventually drives her to kill herself-and we see that it was all an act-the man wasn't really dead and her boyfriend simply wanted the her money. But SHE comes back, swearing revenge on those who tricked her.THE TWO FACES OF EVIL is probably the most disturbing episode of the series, about Doppelgangers. It successfully creates a feeling of paranoia. Here, a family is on vacation and pick up a hitch-hiker, who looks remarkably like the husband. He starts attacking him and they get in a bad car accident. In the hospital the wife wakes up-and sees that her husband has a throat injury, unable to talk. They go to their vacation spot to recover but he is acting really weird-not at all like the person she knows. Is this even her husband-and why do the townsfolk seem to be in on this? In the last story, THE MARK OF SATAN, a hospital orderly becomes convinced that the forces of evil are specifically after him. He starts seeing 'signs' and hearing things telling him who is evil. It seems that every one he knows is working against him. Like the previous story, the viewer isn't quite certain as to what's really happening and the ending is quite a downer. He gets a drill to let out the evil pressures in his head...The HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR is quite a well-done horror series, more like a British version of TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE than TWILIGHT ZONE. Definitely check it out if you come across it.
