Although this movie is probably the lesser of the other three films featuring the famous fictional cannibal, HANNIBAL RISING is nevertheless a decent prequel, telling the story of how he was formed, explaining why he kills and why he eats others. It starts when he was a child in Lithuania during World War II and goes into detail of what a group of would-be Nazi's do to him and his younger sister, Misha. We are shown his dismal life in the orphanage, where he's taunted by other boys, and how he learns to use weapons. The majority of his training happens when he goes to live with his Uncle's widow, a young Japanese woman who has a collection of ancient swords. What I found interesting is that I did not expect this particular biography at all and how, exactly, all the pieces of his life fit together.
The movie works primarily as a revenge movie, as he's entirely justified in going after the men who killed his sister. Hannibal comes off as a sympathetic character to some extent, as the men he is after are far more horrible than he (at least until he catches up with them). Recommended.
