So you are making a movie with a great lineup of actors... including Bobby DeNiro, Dakota Fanning, Famke Janssen and Elizabeth Shue. It is a horror movie, so naturally it is going to be home run right? Wrong. This one basically struck out looking. The family loses their mother and in order to try to cope.. they decide to move out to the country where it is more peaceful. Soon after, the little girl makes an imaginary friend who is causing her to act out in extreme ways. She doesn't seem to want any other friends other than this one... not even her father. The acting out gradually gets worse, until people start dying. Then the girl becomes frightened of her imaginary friend and wants her dad to help her. Ok.. they sortof had me up until here. The story was dragging along... but I stuck with it in hopes of some sort of big payoff. I am still waiting. The plot twists (and problems) take off at this point in the movie. I do not want to play spoiler and give away the twists... but I can say that they made no sense whatsoever. In thinking back, I try to come up with ways to figure out ways to perceive it as plausible... but I have still yet to be able to do that. I was pretty excited about seeing this one, especially given the talent involved... but I was sorely disappointed. If you liked lame twists such as those in The Village... then you will want to see this. Otherwise... if you want to see a DeNiro flick... might I suggest Goodfellas.
