A family on their way to California, breaks down in their camper in a desolate area of the desert. This is near where they tested nuclear bombs in the 50's, which has affected the local population. They are mutant savages who want to have them for dinner. It all culminates with a baby being stolen and the cannibals wanting to devour some "tenderloin baby". The surviving brother and sister get Ruby, sister of the mutants, to help them recover the child. There's also a German Shepherd that is very helpful in dispatching Pluto (Michael Berryman), one of the crazy muties. Written and directed by Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream series), this is to mutant families what George Romero's Night of the Living Dead is for zombies. It's a must see.
