A mother (Teri Polo) moves into a new house with her two sons. She's starting a new job, but you get the feeling they moved for an altogether different reason. Later, we learn it's because of her ex-husband, who used to beat them all. The older brother is reluctant to make new friends--but he quickly becomes interested in the "girl next door". And when they stumble upon a trap door in their basement, which looks like the entrance to a bottomless pit, strange things begin to happen. The hole somehow makes their fears real. It creates a puppet-clown that terrorizes the younger kid-- and brings forth the dreaded father for the older boy. Even the girl is haunted by a literal ghost from her past.
The Hole is nothing new or original, basically director Joe Dante's (Gremlins, Small Soldiers) equivalent of John Carpenter's The Ward-- a big letdown.
