Bermuda Depths, The (1978)
Movie Review by The Gravedigger

Bermuda Depths, The (1978) This is one of the strangest made-for-television movies ever made. A young man named Magnus returns to his home town after spending years in mental hospitals because of a nightmarish incident he suffered as a child-his home was torn apart by someTHING and it killed his father. Now, he's back to get some answers. He encounters an old friend (Carl Weathers) who is doing some marine research in the Bermuda Triangle area-and is tracking a giant sized creature. He works with an old scientist (Burl Ives) who was an associate of Magnus' father. Magnus' father was trying to find the cause of why deep sea creatures grow so large.

One day Magnus is visited on the beach by a beautiful young woman (Connie Selleca) who tells him her name is Jenny Haniver. This prompts him to have a flashback of when he was a kid and encountered her, only she was a girl. In fact, he carved their initials on the back of a sea turtle he had as a pet. When he tells others that he met her they think he's crazy, because "Jenny Haniver" means "fake", as that's the term people used for these faux stuffed mermaids they make and sell on the islands.

Then, when they're out on the boat they encounter the giant creature, which is this enormous sea turtle, several times larger than their boat. And it's right under them.

Jenny appears on the boat and tells Magnus that they mustn't harm the beast, though the captain goes ahead and hits it with a harpoon. It's sort of like Captain Ahab and Moby Dick.

The special effects are crude and the miniatures are all very clearly miniatures but it's entertaining nonetheless. It's one of the few live-action movies produced by Rankin Bass Productions.
