Siblings Reed and Mary Chapel travel to an old castle in the middle of the countryside during a thunderstorm. They are greeted by a hideous servant, Barlow, then meet their host, Doctor Bela Reinhardt (Ron Chaney, grandson of Lon Chaney Jr!). Then, the other invited guests show up. One is Sully, a nerd-type, another is Elmira, a mysterious femme fatale-type woman and the third is Archibald Whitlock, a world-famous big game hunter. He's accompanied by two African servants. Doctor Reinhardt tells them all not to wander the premises and to keep in their rooms, where they are also being watched through holes in wall paintings.
At dinner their cryptic host reveals that they are there for a contest and that the winner will be his heir. But why? Later, Elmira follows a strange spider to a room and encounters an old amputee woman from the old country. She says that the doctor's last name is really Frankenstein, not Reinhardt. Eventually Elmira and Sully realize they are siblings-they have the same father-and that's also why their mother's are disfigured, from claws. You see, their father is a werewolf!
HOUSE OF THE WOLF MAN is shot and acted in the style of a 1940's murder mystery movie, complete with some wooden acting and melodrama. And while the events unfold somewhat slowly there's a great payoff at the end when a few creatures have a showdown. If you're a fan of the Universal Classic monster movies, particularly HOUSE OF DRACULA and HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, you will love this unofficial sequel. Highly recommended.
