In the early 1950's in the French Alps an orphanage is being closed and a young woman, who is trying to hide her pregnancy, goes there to work.
There's a scene at the beginning of the movie where a boy and a girl wake up late at night and hear something in the big, old bathroom. The girl is afraid that "The Scary Children" might show up-and the boy ends up dying when he slips and hits his head. This sets the mood, as from that point on you know the place is haunted.
As the young woman stays there, her only company is an old maid and a disturbed teenager who she looks after. They tell her that the building is just old and that the nightmares she has mean nothing. But she gets it in her head to explore and discover exactly who these "Scary Children" are. She gets the help of the disturbed teenager, who says she can communicate with them. When she finally does find what she's looking for, deep beneath the building, she is surprised, as is the viewer.
HOUSE OF VOICES is one of the creepier movies I've seen in years, with a great location, rich production values and solid acting. If you enjoy movies like THE OTHERS you will like this.
