Willem Dafoe portrays Martin, a mercenary, who is hired by a biotech company to hunt the last "Tasmanian Tiger" (which have officially been extinct since the 1920's). They want the creature's poisonous saliva for a potential weapon. In Tasmania, Martin poses as a scientist studying Tasmanian Devils and rents out a room from a widowed woman and her two children. Her husband had disappeared the previous year and she's still grieving. Although he goes out into the wilderness on his hunt for days at a time, he starts to get attached to this odd family. But there are conflicts with the locals, many of whom are out of a job chopping down trees. He eventually does track down the creature, which is the size of a large dog looks sort of like a hyena. The Hunter is a character study and thriller, with just a touch of a "monster movie" thrown in. Recommended.
