Although this is foremost a comedy I also thought this a very possible - and chilling - vision of the future. I watched this two weeks ago and it's still stuck on my mind. It's kind of like a nightmare...
The premise is that an average, unmotivated guy (Luke Wilson) is frozen for five-hundred years by the Army and awakens to find that he's the smartest man on the planet. At the beginning of the movie it's explained how the stupid people out-bred the super-intelligent people (and, observing my neighbors these past few years, I agree with this idea...). Because he's so "smart" he's recruited by the dim-witted President to fix all of the country's problems, the foremost being that none of the crops are growing. This is because they are watering everything with a "Gatorade-like" drink and the salt is killing the vegetation. This beverage even comes out of the drinking fountains! When he tells them that they have to use water to grow plants, they respond "water from the toilet?", because that's the only thing water is used for. In another sequence we see how large Walmart has grown and observe how the name of Fudrucker's gets changed over the years. What's unsettling about the hole movie is that everything that's shown is plausible, from the giant mountains of garbage to the way the court systems are handled.
IDIOCRACY is simply brilliant! And it is a horror movie!
