On the dvd box it proclaims this MASTERS OF HORROR episode was "Banned from Television" (Showtime), which usually means that it's just too intense for your "average" viewer. Little did I realize how intense and unpleasant this 60-minute movie would be. When we see the bloated, floating corpse within the first few minutes this immediately sets the tone. This is one serious, grim, unpleasant and even shocking little horror movie.
In the mid 1800's a man named Christopher (Billy Drago) travels to an island in Japan to "rescue" a woman he says he's in love with. He had left her a short time before with the promise of his return, but he discovers that he's returned too late. The island he is on harbors an enclave of whores and he spends the night with one of them, a facially deformed woman who has a terrible secret.
Drago's performance is toned down for a change, which is good, and the story unpredictable. The viewer knows that there's going to be a surprise ending-and it's a good one. The special effects, particularly all the dead babies, are also convincing. After you're done watching this short you're left with the feeling of "Damn, perhaps I shouldn't have watched that".
Directed by Takashi Miike.
