Now this what I call an "exploitation" film! A hair-thin plot with heaps of sadism, completely unencumbered by this thing called "purpose". Those who have not seen "Island of Death" have surely heard about it and all of it's "taboo" greatness. Hardly a scene goes by without some form of gruesome and copious act of senseless carnage or devious havoc transpiring...
A young couple, vacationing on a small Greek island, embark on a vicious killing spree, targeting those they deem immoral and impure. Their joyous onslaught involves the crucifixion and forced paint consumption of a french artist who was baited into fucking the dude's chick. They also go after two highly effeminate homosexuals - killing one with a sword and blowing the other's head off. Another memorable demise involves an airplane and one deals with a couple junked-out lesbians who get their comeuppance... One with a spray-can flamethrower! You get the idea. No two people are killed the same way. Pretty strange ending to this one, as well. FAR from predictable, to say the least.
As unabashed as "Island of Death" is, those who go into it with unreasonable expectations - thinking this is the most grisly, savage film ever made will be disappointed. Take it for what it is: prime 70s, ultra-taboo breaking entertainment for it's time. Hell, it holds up just fine for me! The whole thing has a "just for the hell of it" feel and the kind of look that a good, sleazy exploitation film should have. So, if you're not enticed by a goat-rape/stab combo (the real highlight and the film's undoubted legacy, perhaps), I would just advise you to steer clear. Fans of constant violence and "video nasty" completists are urged to seek this one out!
