Malcolm McDowell is a Donald Trump-like character who wants to build a town for the homeless on Hart Island, where they bury all of poor and unidentified bodies in New York City in mass graves. But the spirits of the dead don't want to be disrupted. When McDowell, a police detective (Talisa Soto of VAMPIRELLA, looking very masculine here) and a few convicts become trapped on the island they are attacked by swarms of killer flies who infect with a rapidly deteriorating disease. When someone is bitten they immediately become sick, develop sores and then start rotting, all a matter of minutes. It turns out that McDowell isn't all that humanitarian-he wants to build shelters for the homeless but at the same time use them to experiment on, since he owns a large pharmaceutical company. The odd thing about this movie is that it was shot in Fall or Winter so there's no leaves on the trees. And there should be no flies at all. In fact, we only see the flies in one indoor scene. The other times it's from 'FLY CAMERA' POV. When maggots are shown they use large mealworms instead (which don't eat meat at all-they eat flour and grain), so that kind of took away from the effects. Otherwise a better movie than I thought it would be.
