Next to John Boorman's EXCALIBUR and the Hallmark movie, MERLIN, this is among the best King Arthur movies I've seen. It takes place during the Roman occupation of England, with Arthur and his men basically indentured warriors serving the Romans. On the day they receive their freedom they realize that they have no place in the Roman Empire-and that they should be helping the island's natives. Among them is Guinevere (Kira Knightley of PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN, DR SHIVAGO), who is of the same tribe as Merlin. She's once of the factors that convince Arthur to defend them against the invading Saxons, who turn out to be far more ruthless-and deadlier-- than the Romans. I kept on hearing how violent this movie was, which was surprising, since movies like BRAVEHEART and THE PASSION are far far more bloody and gory than this flick. There are some decapitations and blood flying, but it's somewhat disconnected and you don't see the full extent of it. The important thing is the story and this movie definitely has that going for it. I found this new 'take' on the Arthur legend interesting and the movie an entertaining ride into the past.
