Directed by new-comers Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher, La horde is a French zombie flick that premiered in 2009, in London, at the Film4 Frightfest - a festival similar to the After Dark Horrorfest that I will discuss shortly. Dahan isn't a complete stranger to the genre, as he served as an unaccredited extra in 2007's Frontière(s).
The story focuses in on a family of detectives: Aurore, Ouessem, Jimenez, and Tony, who choose to act outside of the law after Mathias Rivoallan, a fellow comrade and family member, is murdered by a Nigerian gang leader named Adewale Markudi. The quartet assembles a plan to assault the gang who take residence in a dilapidated apartment building in the slums of North Paris. After a violent shootout and their operation turns sour, the group find themselves face to face with Markudi, his brother Bola, and other hired thugs. A decision it made to execute the policemen but before this order can be carried out, a blood- thirsty fiend storms into the apartment and spreads a path of destruction. With a confused lot of opposing parties, they must learn to work together in order to survive the undead invasion.
This movie is fantastic. I haven't enjoyed a zombie film this immensely since my last viewing of '85's Day of the Dead. I could assemble a list that would document my top 5 selections in this sub-genre and I'm more than welcome to add this film to it. There isn't much of a back-story involved; just an in-your-face, action-packed horror film with plenty of well executed special effects and the right amount of gore. This film is subtitled, which I don't mind, so even if you're not an avid supporter of foreign films you could set aside your differences for 90 minutes to enjoy this feature. The zombies aren't terribly intelligent but they do move rather quickly and exhibit the same level of brutality that you'd find in a film like 28 Days Later.
The premise of La horde reminds me so much of the video game Left 4 Dead, a cooperative first-person shooter that features several characters working together to evade a zombie invasion (it should be no surprise to you that I immediately loved playing it). If you love zombies, there's no reason to skip this one - it's a must! What are you waiting for?! Go out! See La horde now!
