As soon as I saw this at my local video store I picked it up--and then put it back down when I saw it was produced by those hacks at The Asylum. But against my better judgement I ended up renting this "modern adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs classic story".
The movie takes place in modern day, with friends aboard a yacht. They get caught in a storm in the Bermuda Triangle (!!!) and then go through a portal in time and end up on the island. It's more of a desert island than a tropical island. There they encounter a T-Rex (why is the dinosaur always a T-Rex?), see some other creatures, and then encounter some survivors, which include some Germans. Oh, and one of them is amazed when he sees a huge dragonfly.
First, the only relation this has to that story is that there are some dinosaurs and some Germans (from WWII, not WWI), as well as that they have to refine their own oil in order to escape from the island. If it wasn't for these things--or that the dvd case says "THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT" I would have never made the connection to the novel. The actors don't even have the characters' names from the book!
There is the minimal of computer effects, which are decent enough, but pales in comparison with just about any other dinosaur theme movie I have seen. C. Thomas Howell, who portrays the main guy, looks very very weary. And he directs! Timothy Bottoms, as Captain Burroughs, looks bewildered and is probably having flashbacks to the 90's LAND OF THE LOST revival he starred in.
Avoid this waste of time at all costs, even if you're curious. Edgar Rice Burroughs is not only turning in his grave, he's probably break dancing.
