A Yuppie couple move into the top apartment of a three-floor brownstone. The guy goes crazy and kills his wife with a baseball bat. Then he offs himself with a hacksaw. The landlord, Tyler, comes to collect the rent and finds their bodies--which doesn't really bother him as much as it should. He's much more irritated that he has to clean up the mess. He's also pissed because they hadn't paid rent yet. We are also introduced to the two demons responsible for this--Rabisu, a green scaled guy, and Lamashtu, a feline creature. You see, Tyler is their slave and provides them with regular meals. Even Tyler's sister, a cop, is in on it. Exactly why they do this is explained, via flashbacks, towards the end of the movie. The main conflict is that Tyler is concerned he'll go to jail. In fact, a detective is just itching to catch him with some bodies, since six tenants have gone missing from his building. There's also a new tenant, a young blonde woman, who Tyler likes. He doesn't want the demons to eat her but how can he prevent them from munching on her?
What this independent movie has going for it is an interesting, unpredictable script with odd characters and some original monsters. It reminded me of a TROMA movie with brains. While some of the makeup effects are lacking, the computer visual effects are good and the acting is top-notch. THE LANDLORD is exactly what independent horror is about.
