In England passengers on a train are put into suspended animation when a canister containing a mysterious gas explodes. This happens when the train is thrown off the tracks in a tunnel. Sometime later the people awaken to find themselves in a blocked off train tunnel and when they eventually get out it looks like they're in the middle of a tropical forest. Woman named Harriet knows what has happened--that a 12 mile long asteroid had impacted with the planet and when it hit, the train was knocked off the tracks and the contents of her canister were released. She tells everyone that only a few years have gone by, but when someone discovers a grave marked 2012, they now realize it's been at least fourteen years. However, when they come across a well preserved town inhabited by an old man and his daughter, they find out it's actually fifty years since the asteroid impacted with the planet.
Their main goal is to find Ark, which is where other people will have been frozen. They are befriended by a young pregnant woman but she's pursued by a tribe of humans who want her back. The train people quarrel amongst themselves, are almost killed when they barely miss driving over the edge of a hidden building that was buried in the side of a hill and have to battle a black panther for food. Eventually they do find the hidden scientific lab but discover everyone had awakened forty-years before and that their descendants, the "children of Ark" are the seemingly wild people who had been pursuing them.
This is a very cool mini-series, along the lines of SURVIVORS and apocalyptic movies like THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR or THE RAVAGERS.
