What a cool movie this is. In 1899 Many 19th century literary characters-Dorian Grey, Dr.Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde, Mina Harker (Bride of Dracula), Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man and Alan Quartermain (KING SOLOMON'S MINES) are recruited by a secret English government agency to stop a ruthless villain named The Fantom, from starting a world war. They're also joined by U.S. secret agent Sawyer (yes, Tom Sawyer!). It remains faithful to all those fictional characters, in both how they look and behave. While the story isn't all that complicated the effects are-and there's some amazing scenes that happen in Venice as they try to stop some bombs from exploding. And, of course, Sean Connery shines as Quartermain. I wasn't sure what to expect when I went to see this and I was pleasantly surprised. It made me want to re-watch all those movie adaptations of those books again.
