Ted Danson is Jonathan Dempsey, a down-and-out professor who is sent by his University to prove that the Loch Ness Monster does not exist. He's given state of the art equipment and outfits a rented boat. He rents a room at the local hotel, which is run by a woman and her young daughter. After one week of investigating and scanning the lake he comes up with no evidence whatsoever. But then he develops some film left by his predecessor, which shows a giant flipper. Rather than going back to Los Angeles he decides to stay longer and goes back out to investigate. In the end it's the young daughter of the innkeeper who shows him where the monster lives, which is in a cavern beneath a local castle. He sees not only one of the prehistoric beasts but two-a breeding pair. He quickly takes some pictures but this disturbs the creatures and as a result the girl almost drowns. Now, feeling vindicated in his discovery, he tells his colleagues and plans to announce this at a lecture in London. But after he thinks about it and considers the repercussions to the animals and the townsfolk-he decides to tell everyone that it's all a hoax, that he made it all up. He did the right thing. This is a surprisingly well-done movie, definitely in the Disney vein but not quite as sappy as it could have been.
