This network television movie makes many of those killer animal movies made for the Sci-Fi Channel look good. A blonde Lucy Lawless (XENA) is Dr. Maddy Rierden, an investigator for the department of agriculture. It's up to her and her associates to stop a gigantic swarm of bio-engineered locusts from ultimately consuming all the food on the Earth. The person responsible for creating them was a colleague (John Heard) who was moonlighting for the Department of Defense. She had fired him but now needs his expertise in trying to defeat them. The army wants to spray a dangerous nerve-toxin on them, which will also kill 10-20% of the human population. Rierden eventually comes up with the brainstorm of electrocuting them, like with a giant bug zapper. Why no one thought of this earlier is puzzling. Even more puzzling is why, while these grasshoppers will each everything from oranges to sheep, they aren't eating any people. There should be scenes like that one with the locusts in THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES! The closest we get to that, however, is when Heard sacrifices himself to save the others he's with and gets kind of mauled up. It's like a scene from THE BIRDS. In the end, though, Xena manages to save the majority of the country's crops. This network television movie makes many of those killer animal movies made for the Sci-Fi Channel look good. Croppy!
