This is an old-fashioned post-apocalyptic movie. The last group of humans are hunting a giant ground sloth-like creature but stray onto forbidden lands. One of the hunters is bitten and quickly begins to mutate into a "Beast". Then, soon after their return, the tribe is attacked by these animal men, who are in various stages of mutation. These beast-men follow them back to their tribe and there's a slaughter. The majority of the people take refuge in a cave but three youths are trapped outside, so they run away for safety. It turns out that one of them, Caleb, can read. His father had taught him and now he's the only one who has this skill. He carries around a battered copy of Tom Sawyer. When they are attacked by a mutant, who turns out to be the leader of their tribe who was bitten and transformed, they are saved by Amal (Sean Bean). He knew Caleb's father and had been keeping an eye on the son. He tells the trio that even though they haven't been bitten by the mutants they are still contaminated by the contact and will slowly become them. That is, unless they get the "yellow powder" that Caleb's father had created, a powder that makes people immune to the beast virus. Amal also knows a bit about man's history and how, through genetic manipulation, they were able to bring back prehistoric beasts like the giant sloth and the mammoth. That's why everything seems so prehistoric. So they decide to journey to retrieve the powder. It's been stolen by the leader of a huge island city (New York?). All the buildings are covered in vines and other vegetation.
I liked this movie. It sort of reminds me of YOR: HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE and old TV series like ARK II and LOGAN'S RUN.
