In this unaired television pilot, which I think was originally supposed to be done by Tim Burton, Melissa George (ALIAS, ROAR) is Alex Wilder, who must somehow lead Oz in a fight against the new Wicked Witch of the West (Mia Sara). Once in Oz she meets a World War II soldier who has been there for over a year, a man with the nick name of "Scarecrow". It isn't until she meets up with the Patchwork Girl that she understands where she is or what she's supposed to do. The OZ portrayed here is bleaker than in RETURN TO OZ --much of it is being turned black by the Wicked Witch. In fact, there's one scene in which they're standing where the Yellow Brick Road began in THE WIZARD OF OZ, yet it's a dead place and there are bones about. The munchkins are no more. I can see why this wasn't picked up as a series, as there's no spark between the main characters, the special effects are minimal and the overall story is weak.
Directed by Mick Garris.
