While not the most original premise (I've seen at least six variations of this tale from student films to independents), Rory Abel's fifteen minute short is a horrific relationship piece that you sort of feel guilty watching. At the beginning of the short we're introduced to an assuming, seemingly normal guy who we quickly finds out is a serial killer. There are all these newspaper clippings in his apartment with missing girls. There's also a woman, gagged, tied to his bed. He talks to her as if this isn't a problem and that they have a normal relationship. A few times lets her think that she can escape, but catches and punishes her. In fact, there's one seen where he cuts off a small body part and makes her eat it.
On the extra's "Won't You Be My Neighbor?", there's a clip where the filmmakers are trying to get a neighbor to be quiet so they can shoot a scene--and the guy goes on and on...sort of reminded me of a Seinfeld episode. And it's something most filmmakers experience one time or the other.
LOVE STORY is shot well, has good actors and succeeds in both hooking the viewer and making you squirm. Hopefully we'll be seeing more movies from this filmmaker.
