The first few minutes of this 9 minute short film really made me cringe, which is a good thing for a horror piece to do. A man is strapped to a table and is poked and prodded by various sci-fi looking machinery. There is a 'doctor' there, but we get the sense that this isn't really a person, rather some type of cybernetic creature, as he's attached to this big umbelical cord. The closest thing to any other film this reminded me of was the first PHANTASM movie, with those flying silver balls, or even a NINE INCH NAILS music video. This intense scene provoked the same surreal feeling. Then, when this man is done with another new 'victim' takes to the table. Next, we're in what looks like a typical suburban home-the man comes home in a suit to talk to his obviously drugged out wife. When she opens a nearby cabinet we see it lined with many pill containers. What I got out of the meaning is that everyday life puts you through the ringer and that some people take their daily grind while others cope with it by consuming various substances, which makes MAINSTREAM a comment about modern, mainstream American society. But, I could be wrong, it's just my interpretation. This short film is included on the FANGORIA BLOOD DRIVE II DVD, which is now out at the video rental stores-and if the other films included on that compilation are of the same caliber, then it's definitely worth checking out.Written/Directed by Adam Barnick, www.adambarnick.com.
