Yes, there is indeed a maniac on the loose and he has escaped from the Madisonville Psychiatric Hospital with ease. Melissa, on her way to a blind date with a guy named Alex, hears the warning about the escapee on the radio and almost runs into a guy that looks to be the fugitive nutcase. When she arrives at Alex's house she meets a creepy guy named Max (Hudgins) who informs her that Alex left for a few minutes but that he'll be back. Then the movie flashbacks to when "Max" first arrived at the house. He knocks on the door and asks the owner if he can come in, since this is his childhood house. Alex agrees and lets him in, though it's a mistake. Later, both Alex and Melissa wake up, bound, on a bed, and see a bunch of power tools on a nearby table. It looks as if "Max" is going to have some fun.
At the mental hospital, the doctor of the escaped patient seems like he's having a mental breakdown himself because he can't figure out how the guy escaped. Or how the media knows of the escape. Only three people were aware of the breakout--the doctor, his alcoholic secretary and a security guard by the cryptic name of "Ski Mask", since he hides his identity from the mental patients. As the movie progresses you realize that there may indeed be more than one dangerous crazy person on the loose.
This is one of those movies in which you're not quite sure what's really going on, which is helped immensely by the non-linear construction of the narrative. This keeps you guessing. It's also performance driven and fortunately all the actors are up to the task, including director Hudgins who portrays one of the more unbalanced ones. If you're looking for a well-written ultra independent horror movie then check out MANIAC ON THE LOOSE.
