Masters of Horror: Volume 2: Don Coscarelli & Mick Garris
Coscarelli's segment AN INCIDENT ON AND OFF A MOUNTAIN ROAD, which is based on a Joe Lansdale short-story is the creepier of the two. A woman driving through the mountains at night runs into a car stopped on the road. She crashes into it, then goes to see if the other people are hurt. She finds an empty car-and a trail of blood leading over the edge of a cliff. At first she thinks the person is injured-but when they come up she sees it's this crazy looking albino guy and his victim, who is crying for help.
The movie cuts back and forth with her trying to outwit and fight this monster-to flashbacks with her survivalist husband, who forced her to learn how to defend herself, something which is now coming in very handy. She is eventually taken prisoner in his house which has dozens of rotted bodies staked out on crosses in the yard. There's a crazy old man (Angus Scrimm), who tries to talk to her but he's of no help-and may actually be helping the creature he calls "Moon Face".
CHOCOLATE, directed by Mick Garris and based on his own short story, seems a bit misplaced here, as there's not much that's horrific or even gory. A lonely man starts getting visions through the eyes of a woman and eventually falls in love with her. He manages to find out who she is and eventually goes to meet up with her, to see if she's seeing things through his eyes and if the emotions he is feeling are mutual. The crux of the problems is that he knows that she killed her former boyfriend. She also thinks he's utterly crazy-and things go downhill from there. Granted, I liked this better than Garris' Stephen King adaptations, but it still seemed somehow unfinished...
