A computer hacker, Neo (Keanu Reeves), senses that something is amiss with his world. He just can't put his finger on it. He runs into Trinity (Carrie Anne Moss), who he knows is a fellow hacker and alludes that she may have some answers. He gets a mysterious call from Morpheus, who says he can offer information about The Matrix, which may be the crux of everything. When he meets Morpheus face to face he's given a choice of ingesting two pills. If he takes the red one he'll find out the truth. If he takes the blue one he'll forget everything and believe this all a dream. He takes the red one--and awakens in a bleak future where humans are grown on farms as living batteries, powering the sentient machines that have overtaken the planet. He's rescued by the real-life Morpheus and Trinity and their crew, who have a big hovercraft they use to navigate this weird world.
Their primary enemies are Mr. Smith (Hugo Weaving of LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER) and the sentient computer programs that hunt the rogue humans down. Morpheus believes that Neo is "the one", that he'll be humanity's savior. Neo isn't quite sure he believes this or wants the responsibility. But there is a traitor in their midst that may undo everything...
I hadn't seen this movie in over a decade and it holds up extremely well. It is a unique vision of the future.
