This prequel is what AMITYVILLE II: THE POSSESSION is to that first film--a much better movie.
We're introduced to struggling farmer John Rollins (Norman Reedus), who finds a weird-looking scarecrow stashed away in a hidden room in his barn. Immediately John's young son hates the thing and makes Dad promise to get rid of it. However, the strange new neighbor convinces John to put it up in his field. Right away his crow problems are solved and he spends the day burning bird corpses. Then the broken water pump starts mysteriously working. But people are also dying--first, the banker who threatens to foreclose his farm, then the potential extra-marital affair for his wife. John is also hearing voices and the creepy sounds of giggling children in his cornfield.
What I liked about his movie is that it isn't what you expect it will be, especially as to the identity of "The Messengers" this time around. It also sets up more of a canvassing backstory if they're going to make more movies in this franchise. Yes, I could have done without the rampaging scarecrow at the end but it is a disturbing looking creature.
