A woman gets a letter from her brother which says that he's discovered gold in an old abandoned mine-and includes a sizable nugget as proof. She gathers four more of her friends and they agree to meet out there. The problem is that the gold is cursed by "The Forty-Niner"-and the zombie prospector kills anyone who steals his treasure (sort of like a Leprechaun). One by one they are killed off in gruesome ways, from hangings to decapitations.
There's a flashback scene to the mid-1800's, in which Jeff Conaway (TAXI) portrays a priest whose daughter is slain by the prospector. This is also where the viewer is told that he was a Satan worshipper, et cetera.
The story is a bit formulaic but the special makeup effects are decent enough.
Directed by John Carl Buechler (FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH: THE NEW BLOOD)
