A young, harmless looking drifter travels down the West Coast in his pickup truck, arbitrarily poisoning people he encounters. He envisions that he is changing people's lives. In one small town he decides to rent out a room and stay for a while. He soon gets a job at the local post office, which seems to calm his inner demons, sort of the opposite of 'going postal'. The couple he is renting the room from is odd, the wife too friendly and the man secretly violent. We learn that the reason they have the vacant room is that their daughter ran away, probably due to the father's angry fits. When the wife is brutally killed one day we're not sure if it's the stranger or the husband, which I guess is the point of this movie, that anyone can be a serial killer.
