Charlize Theron deservedly won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Aileen Wuornos, America's first documented serial killer. The movie begins when she meets a young woman at a gay bar who is attracted to her--and she quickly establishes a friendship, not because she has a strong sexual interest in this woman but because she's someone who seems to care about her. And Wuornos is extremely attention starved not to mention having an explosive temper. After she's raped one night and tied up she manages to escape and shoot the rapist. She steals his gun and the car and tells her female friend that she's stopping the prostitution. She tries to get a 'regular' job but has no experience whatsoever. So, in order to get money, she steals from whom she views to be her would-be attackers. She gets the guys out in the woods, kills them and then takes their money. Of course, many of these guys don't deserve what happens to them. The murders are also very brutal. What helps make the movie so depressing is the contrast of the upbeat 80's JOURNEY and REO SPEEDWAGON songs to what's going on in these people's lives. The movie is constructed in such a way so that you empathize for the serial killer-so that it's devastating what eventually happens to her. What a bumber of a movie-but a very good one.
