Wow. What can I say about Mortal Kombat 2? My main guy Johnny Cage gets wasted in the first five minutes. Christopher Lambert takes a hike leaving an unimpressive character actor named James Remar to take his place. As a matter of fact only two original performers return, Lui Kang, and Kitana thankfully are portrayed by the same people. What the hell happened here? Jesus, maybe they should have added a payroll to the budget, huh?
Then we have Minotaro which is a pretty cool replacement for Prince Goro, and Shao Khan himself. Brian Thompson (Cobra, Fright Night 2) is a big guy, but Shao Khan He aint. Shang Tsung would whip his ass, yet he is the underling? I don't think so. The actions of MK 1 are made pointless, as Shao Khan is able to break all rules and invade Earth anyway. Lui Kang is told through the whole move by a weakened Raiden he is not strong enough to beat Khan even though he effortlessly beat an awesome Shang Tsung. Plain foolishness and cliche. The film was rushed, and obviously pushed through production. This could have been a SYFY channel movie.
I love action movies, the far out, and this genre and game series. It even has Smoke, Baraka, Big Jax, and the whole gang even Princess Kitana's hot mom Sindel! But it just is not enough. I was disappointed.
Let's talk Blu-Ray
Video: 2.5 out of 5
This presentation looks like a up converted DVD. The colors and blacks are muted, and grey. Nothing here says "look at me". There is no impressive factor here. It does look a little better than the DVD presentation I have seen in the past, but not much. Diehards will appreciate this edition, but I could not see anything giving it the HIGH DEF designation worthiness.
Audio: 4 out of 5
The fight scenes were loud and proud, and of course your living room will sound like a 90's rave. Mortal Kombat 2 audio succeeds where the video and movie itself fail. The rear channels are well utilized and the bass rocks. I hope the sound engineers were paid more than the crummy director, and screen writer.
Extras: None to speak of. Maybe a trailer, Whatever...
