This movie honestly surprised me in how good is, primarily because I've been hearing mixed reviews about it the past few months. However, MUTANT CHRONICLES is one cool movie and so far, one of the best horror flicks of 2009.
It's about seven hundred years in the future and mankind has used up almost all the planet's natural resources, to such an extent that even the spaceships are rigged to work on coal. People are still at war and it's during one of these battles that this ancient mutant-making machine is awakened--and unleashes a bunch of mutants, who quickly decimate the human troops. One soldier by the name of Mitch Hunter (Thomas Jane) escapes, though he's recruited by a monk named Brother Samuel (Ron Perlman) to try and stop this alien invasion force. The last time these creatures were seen was during the Roman empire.
While the big corporations that rule the Earth flee to the safety of Mars, a ragtag group of soldiers travel underground to the source of the mutants, which is this huge spaceship that takes humans and transforms them into scythe appendaged monsters. The process is creepy and unrelenting--and a lot of them don't make it.
The production values of MUTANT CHRONICLES are great and the director has succeeded in creating a very convincing future world. The movie also has an ironic ending that had me chuckling.
