This is a good attempt at updating the Avengers from the 60's to the 70's, with Steed (Patrick Macnee) being the mentor of two younger agents, Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt) and Purdy (Joanna Lumley). There's a lot of sexual innuendo between the two of them, and I get the feeling this series is far more influenced by the James Bond movies than it is the original AVENGERS. Purdy is completely different in look and demeanor but does give Emma Peel a run for her money. Some episodes have returning villains, such as in RETURN OF THE CYBER-MEN, there are agents who are exact physical doubles, a guy who uses birds to kill people and a cult which is protecting the frozen body of Hitler!. My favorite episode, though it's by no means the best episode, is GNAWS, in which a scientist accidently drops a growth formula down into the sewers and a rat grows gigantic, feeding on people. I think this is the first JAWS spoof ever done, as it was done the same year as that movie's release.
