A 're-imagining' of the classic Darren McGavin television show casts Stuart Townsend (QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN) as intrepid newspaper reporter Carl Kolchak. He's suspected of killing his wife, though nothing was ever proven. In a flashback we see that they were attacked by 'pseudo werewolves'-who dragged her from the car and ripped the fetus from her womb--and Carl continues to try to find out the what and why his pregnant wife was killed. Rather than concentrate on a 'monster of the week', as did the original show, there's more of a continuing story here, just as in X-FILES, which this show most closely resembles. There's also a supporting cast-a woman crime reporter and her photographer, who witness some strange goings on with Kolchak. In the pilot episode we see a shot of the newspaper room-and the original Carl Kolchak (Darrin McGavin), complete with straw hat, is computer added to the crowd. Plotlines so far have involved a prisoner who can kill people with his mind, a motorcycle gang that could be werewolves, and ghosts. This show does manage to capture the feeling of the original, though all the characters are completely different and the stories much more serious. And because of such shows as THE X-FILES and MILLENIUM, which were ironically inspired by the original NIGHT STALKER, this new 'envisioning' seems somewhat of a rerun.
