I have somewhat mixed feelings about this "re-imagining" of the classic 70's Television show. Given a choice between the two I enjoy the original series with Darrin McGavin much better. It's simply more fun.
Yet this new series worked as well, much more like an X-FILES than the show it's trying to re-do. The only thing that's the same are the names of Carl Kolchak and his editor, Tony Vincenzo-and the fact that he works at a newspaper. The monsters here are more human ones, such as a blind prison convict who can kill with his mind, a guy who dehydrates people with his hands, a motorcycle gang of ghosts and a woman who may be hundreds of years old (because she eats human brains). Rather than it being a "monster of the week", the producers tried to tie the shows together by having a REASON Carl investigates the supernatural-he's trying to find out why his wife and unborn child were killed. It sort of works but seems kind of forced. The original Kolchak did it simply because he was a die-hard investigative reporter. And pairing him up with a female reporter you can see how they're trying to re-create that Mulder/Skully dynamic.
The dvd set includes the six televised episodes and also includes the four unaired shows, which are among the better ones. I think if this show was titled something else, without the tenuous ties to the 70's show, it may not have been cancelled.
