I was hoping this would be an interesting take on the genre, with Hal Hartley adding his directorial quirkiness to the stew. Instead, we get an extremely boring 'fish out of water' movie that seems overly familiar. Robert Burke's demon makeup is really well done-- but he's not a threatening monster. Sarah Polley, as his human friend, is just kind of there. And the ending is indeed pretentious. As with NADJA this monster movie as art film does not work. You'll find no such thing as an entertaining story here.
