While placing a satellite in orbit five astronauts witness the "implosion" of the Earth. Soon after, they are contacted by an alien called "The Keeper", who says he can send them five years back in time to prevent this catastrophe. He tells them that he's visited five other worlds that were similarly destroyed and with Earth he might be able to help. So the astronauts, led by Peter Weller (Robocop, Buckaroo Banzai), agree to go back in time. Just their minds are sent back, so the youngest astronaut (also the Weller character's son) is 17 and in High School.
At first I thought this was a limited series, in that the whole five years would be wrapped up-but as I watched the show it turns out that it's much more like X-Files or an alien invasion type show, where there are self-contained stories. The first (and only) season takes place within the first year. But the characters discover that things don't happen exactly like the remembered them, as their going back in time has subtly changed things. The creature they are after, called a Sentient (created by the internet), is able to create synthetic humanoids that look exactly like the real thing. In fact, there are many of these self-aware computer programs. The most entertaining episode featured Ted Raimi as a sentient in a synthetic body, who is basically a sci-fi fan boy. He even quotes a line from Buckaroo Banzai to Weller, "Wherever you go, there you are" which is a hoot.
Although I found the majority of ODYSEEY FIVE to be entertaining, I was a bit disappointed that the show wasn't more interesting and took more risks, considering the whole time-travel aspect.
