You know, this is a horror movie. I put off seeing it until it came out on DVD just because EVERYONE was seeing it and I'm not one to conform with what everyone else is doing.Anyways, I was surprised. This is one of the nastiest movies I've seen since MARK OF THE DEVIL. Unpleasant to watch to the point of making me feel masochistic afterwards. Just grueling. If you like seeing someone being beaten to death for two hours than this is right up your alley. The person I was watching it with walked out during the whipping scene. If the exact same amount of gore and violence was in a movie that dealt with a different subject matter it would be NC-17 or unrated. The weird thing is, is that I know people who won't let their children see PG-13 movies yet they dragged them (for multiple viewings) to this gorefest, gleefully telling them (eight-year-olds) that they'll learn something good. The scenes involving the devil were really hokey. They got this androgynous-looking guy to play the part (which I guess is a dig against anyone who isn't heterosexual), lurking around in the background. The sets & special effects are great, though. But as far as a message and people actually feeling good or teary-eyed after they see this movie.... And it sold something like 4.5 million DVD copies in the first few days of its release. I had a hard time watching this abuse once--but buying the DVD so can watch over and over again? I shake my head.I don't get it. I just don't get it.
