As with the two previous movies this is about an hour too long but it is probably the best of the trilogy, wrapping up the story in a satisfying way.
The crew of the Black Pearl goes to the underworld to retrieve Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who seems to have gone nuts (nuttier?), and this is an interesting sequence as it reminded me of an early Terry Gilliam film (TIME BANDITS or BARON MUNCHHAUSEN). The overly complicated story-line and all the back-and-forth of people betraying each other gets a bit tiresome (as it did in the other two movies) but the special effects are great, particularly the crew of the Flying Dutchman, who have turned into hybrid man/sea creatures. That end scene is also amazing, with the ships firing canons at each other while they are circling a giant whirlpool...
This PIRATE trilogy didn't work for me the way the original STAR WARS trilogy or even THE LORD OF THE RINGS did. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of pirates.
