This is a departure from Michael Legge's earlier, more comedic work, a tale about a man so depressed about his birthday that he tries to kill himself by overdosing on sleeping pills. Add to this the fact that his wife is throwing him a surprise birthday and has invited all his friends, who secretly want to destroy him in one way or another, and you have one miserable individual. Although it does have its situational comedic moments, such as when the call-girl shows up at his house to find him unconscious, with the empty bottle of pills in his hand, the movie does leave you with a feeling of hopelessness for everyone involved. The main character doesn't get rejuvinated about life--he's just able to go on to the next day, as do all the other characters. When death comes knocking on his door, in the guise of an old drunk man, he tells him that the party's over, and death agreeably leaves. There's no life to take! Its low-budget status aside POTENTIAL SINS comes off like a cross between a Bergman movie and THE BIG CHILL, with a touch of KIDS IN THE HALL thrown in for good measure.
