A woman (Mimi Rogers) who hates her boring phone job entertains herself by having lots of sex with strangers. Then she meets a guy she has a connection with (A pre-X-Files David Duchovny). But she feels that she's missing something--and keeps on hearing people talking about "the Pearl" and hearing voices from God. She tries to pretend she hears them but they know she's lying. She just wants a reason for existence. Then, she starts having the dreams and becomes a true believer. She's anxious for the world to end but it takes years. And six years later she's married to the guy and has a six-year old daughter. After he is shot to death by a disgruntled, fired employee, her belief becomes even stronger and is convinced she and her daughter should give up everything and go into the desert for the Rapture. It doesn't happen. What does happen is that the girl wants to see her daddy in heaven and she ends up shooting her kid. But she can't bring herself to kill herself since suicides to to hell. So she's taken to prison. Does the Rapture ever happen? You'll be surprised at the ending--and it's a good ending. This is an extremely creepy movie. Sort of like Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a religious slant....
