During the 80's, there were a select handful of non-slasher films that became fan favs, cult classics, and legends. Re-Animator surely falls into that elite group... hands down. This movie, adapted from an H.P. Lovecraft story, made Jeffery Combs and Barbara Crampton household names among us horror film buffs and put Brian Yuzna's name on the map as name in the film business. Combs play Herbert West, a scientist/doctor out to give life to the dead through his artificial re-agent. This process does cause some special side effects such as enhanced strength and a zombiefied state of course. This movie steamrolls from one crazy, gory situation to the next as West drags a young medical student and his girlfriend into his twisted world of re-animating the dead. David Gale does a great job as the sick Dr. Hill who wants to use West's serum and steal the credit. Thankfully, West decapitates Hill with a shovel and we get to see the re-animated Dr. walk around through the rest of the film carrying his own head in a pan. This movie has it all! Sexy Barbara Crampton not only does a great job playing the dazed and confused girlfriend, but also looks damn hot naked! Remember the days when actresses, I'm real actresses, didn't mind showing it all in a horror film? She and David Gale share the most memorable scene from the film as that lusty Dr. Hill shows Babs the real meaning of getting some head, hehehehehe! Gotta love that stuff. Really, who hasn't scene this movie? Shame on you! It still packs a load of fun and gore. Herbert West was getting strangled by lower colon long before Peter Jackson's Brain Dead hit us. Certainly, this is the best movie with the Lovecraft name attached to it by a ways. The bottom line is Re-Animator works on every level and has stood the cliched test of time. You must own this.
